The double chain cast on has become one of my all time favourite cast ons. I love how it is the same on both sides. I also love how smooth and neat this cast on is. Thus, I use this cast on in almost ALL of my knitting patterns. It really creates a beautiful cast on edge. You can use this cast on for many different projects. Blankets, scarves, shawls, etc.
You will need one needle (or a set of circular needles) and a crochet hook to work this cast on. It can be done with just needles, but I find the crochet hook method a lot more simple.
Please note: If you use this cast on, there is a trick when working the first row. Some knitters were having trouble with a gap between the cast on edge and the first row. I figured out why I wasn’t having the same issue. It’s very simple. Check out this video after you learn the Double Chain cast on.
Trick for working the first row after the Double Chain Cast on.
One of my favourite things about this cast on, is that it is the same on both sides. Whether working in rows or the rounds, it doesn’t matter.
I recommend this cast on for most of my Mystery Knit Afghans. My Mindfulness Mystery Knit Afghan 2023 as well as A Seamless Wonder Afghan. Once you have mastered this cast on, you will love it and it will be hard to go back to a different cast on! It takes time to grasp this cast on, and time for it to become easy to use. Good luck!
