My Knitting Mishap

written by KnotEnufKnitting September 23, 2025

Have you ever had a knitting mishap? I was recently on a trip to South Dakota and had about 10 hours of time in the vehicle. With hat much time, I get excited because I bring along my knitting. There is nothing better than knitting on a road trip! I absolutely love it and I usually plan to get more accomplished then I do, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

The day started out beautiful. Sunny and no clouds in sight, a great day for a road trip. I picked up my knitting to realize my first mistake. My crochet hook was at home in my knitting basket. This new project required the provisional cast on and it is much easier to work with the crochet hook. I consulted my maps. After Regina, there would be no major cities until we were almost at our destination. We were travelling through the eastern part of Montana. We had taken the Regina bypass to save time, but I decided it was crucial to get a crochet hook. So, after a 1/2 hour delay, I was the happy owner of two new crochet hooks.

My design required about 150 stitches. I finished the cast on and was eager to start into the pillow. Probably a little too eager. As usual, I verified stitches were not twisted as I joined the round and I contentedly knit about 2″ to realize to my horror, that my stitches were indeed twisted. There is nothing I could do except to tink back to the start. I was not happy to start again.

This time I double checked that my stitches were not twisted before I joined the round and I started happily knitting again. Only to stop at about 1″ of my work to realize that I had twisted them again! I couldn’t believe it. Maybe it was time to put the work away as I could have already been 3″ into my knitting and I had to go back to square one….

I sadly unwound my knitting once again. Back to the start. This time, I triple checked that my stitches did not twist in the round. After the first round, I checked again. I probably checked after the next 10 rounds to make sure I hadn’t twisted them. It’s easy to do. In the above picture, the stitches do not twist, but it looks like they are. I am using 24″ needles for a 36″ circumference. The stitches bunch up a little bit at the beginning so it is hard to make sure they are not twisted. But, luckily for me, 3 times was the charm and I happily knit for the rest of my road trip.

Has this ever happened to you?
