How to Knit Neat Edges

written by KnotEnufKnitting March 31, 2023

I have often heard and seen the question, “How do knit neat edges on my knitting items”.  This could be an afghan, blanket, cardigan, scarf, or basically any knitted item that is knit in rows.  It can be frustrating to knit a blanket that takes so much time, only to be unsatisfied with the edge results.   There is a very easy way to fix this, even if your pattern isn’t designed with these nice edges.

The fix is very simple.  We use the slip stitch to create these edges.  However, we must be careful on how we are slipping these stitches.  We will slip them differently depending if we are working on a RS or a WS row.

Rules:

In most cases, we will cast on 2 extra stitches than what the pattern calls for.  We will work these two stitches at the start and end of the row on both sides.

RS row:  Slip the first stitch knitwise.  Knit the last stitch.  You can knit this stitch through the back loop as well.

WS row:  Slip the first stitch purlwise.  Purl the last stitch.

It is really that simple!  Try this on your next blanket, cardigan or scarf.    You will see how more smooth and complete your knitting will look.
