What is in a Sweater Design?

written by KnotEnufKnitting January 29, 2019

What is in a Sweater Design?

Our Little Elsa Sweater has been a much-loved pattern for many years already. It first came out in February 2014, 5 years ago already! The first request for an adult version of this sweater followed close behind! We knew we loved this idea — Little Elsa blown up to adult size, now you can really see those cables!

So, going from child size to adult size should mean just adding a few stitches, right? Mmmm… maybe not! Look closely at the two pictures below and see what differences you can spot.

Little Miss Elsa Sweater Knitting Pattern

Taking a sweater from a small size to adult size requires an entire pattern reknit, rewrite and retest. We thought it might be interesting to share a little of the process with you!  What works with a child’s sweater, might not necessarily work with the adult version. The cables for example need to be sized appropriately for the width of the sweater so they don’t get lost or take over the entire sweater.  This of course means customizing the front cable panel for different sizes. In the adult version, there are two slightly different cable panels. And as cute as the bell sleeves and hem are on Little Elsa’s Sweater, we didn’t quite see it carrying over to the adult size!  Adult Elsa Sweater is finished with a classic double rib stitch instead. We love the way the hem sits, snug, but not tight! Another thing to note, is that we were also asked to have two different style necklines.  The cable neckline is the first option and the other is a double rib neckline. The knitter can choose which option they prefer.

Those are a few of the details put in to taking a pattern from child size to adults size. Each of our KnotEnufKnitting patterns have been tested by our wonderful test knitters. Much thanks to them for helping streamline this process!

Adult Elsa can be purchased on its own as a pattern here, and in a set with Little Elsa’s Sweater here.

Enjoy the knit, and enjoy watching for the little details that make the adult sweater fit just right!
