How to Knit the Moss Stitch

written by KnotEnufKnitting February 2, 2016
Learn the Popular Moss Stitch!

The moss stitch has been one of my favourite stitches! I have learned through testing my patterns with various knitters, that the moss stitch is different in America and Britain. The moss stitch in Britain is the same as the seed stitch in America. Brits call this stitch the double moss stitch. You can see how knitters can get confused!

It is called the American moss stitch or the double moss stitch.

Regardless of the name, I love to add this stitch to my patterns. It is very simple and only requires knits and purls. But, the result is well satisfying!

How to knit the moss stitch in rows:
Cast on an even number of stitches.

Row 1: *(k1, p1) repeat from * to the EOR.
Row 2: *(k1, p1), repeat from * to the EOR.
Row 3: *(p1, k1) repeat from * to the EOR.
Row 4: *(p1, k1), repeat from * to the EOR.

Repeat rows 1 – 4.

How to knit the moss stitch in rounds (even number of stitches):
Cast on an even number of stitches and join the round.

Round 1: *(k1, p1), repeat from * around to EOR.
Round 2: *(k1, p1), repeat from * around to EOR.
Round 3: *(p1, k1), repeat from * around to EOR.
Round 4: *(p1, k1), repeat from * around to EOR.

Are You Ready to Try Your New Stitch?

You’ve learned the skill, now here’s the chance to give it a try!!

Here is an easy headband to make! Size fits toddler.
However, you can knit it longer to fit any size you desire.

Note: If you make it for a bigger size, cast on extra stitches, always an even amount.

Yarn: Any worsted weight yarn. Approximately 25 yards.

Needles: Recommend 4.5 mm [8 US] needles, however size is not so important for this headband.

Cast on 12 stitches using your prefered cast on method.
Round 1: *(k1, p1), repeat from * around to EOR.
Round 2: *(k1, p1), repeat from * around to EOR.
Round 3: *(p1, k1), repeat from * around to EOR.
Round 4: *(p1, k1), repeat from * around to EOR.

Work rounds 1 – 4 until measures 18”.

Bind off loosely.

Fold the headband into a circle. The bound off edge will overlap the cast on edge by 1”. Using a tapestry needle, sew the cast on edge onto the back of the headband.

Sew on 1 – 2 buttons through both sections of the headband. Weave in all tail ends. Enjoy!
